The British soldiers and Native Americans (re-enactors) are setting up their encampments.  The colonials are putting out their wares, the fort has been built and the food vendors are set to go!  Join us Saturday and Sunday for the 4th Annual French Creek Heritage Event at the Cochranton Fairgrounds and let the Rebellion begin!

Kayak Float July 14

CARE is inviting kayakers to float along side history by joining the Native American and colonial re-enactors as they paddle in to the French Creek Heritage Event on July 14, from Shaw's Landing to Cochranton.  Let us know you are coming by emailing kwellmon13@gmail.com or text 814-720-8378 by Friday evening.  Registration limited to 20.  Laws require that all boats have a launch permit, life jacket for each boater and a whistle.

 

 

Lincoln Logs® Wanted

      Lincoln Logs® are needed by the Cochranton Area Redevelopment Effort for a children’s activity at this year’s French Creek Heritage Event to be held in July at the Cochranton Fairgrounds.  
         If you have Lincoln Logs® in need of a new home, CARE would appreciate the donation.  Donations may be dropped off at the Cochranton Borough office on E. Adams St  or at Roche Graphics on Roche Lane, Cochranton.
      The event’s theme for 2018 is Pontiac’s Rebellion 1763-1766, an historical event that resulted in the burning of Fort Venango in Franklin.  Added  activities to include the younger visitors in local history is seen as an important goal for CARE.  Local forts and Lincoln Logs® seem a natural fit.

Historical Marker Set at Cochranton Landing

The French Creek access site at the foot of the bridge crossing the creek in Cochranton continues to see improvement thanks to the Cochranton Area Redevelopment Effort (CARE).  In addition to the picnic and parking area recently renovated by the group, the area is now sporting a new name along with the historical marker planted near its entrance. The park area has been officially recognized by the borough council as Cochranton Landing and will give CARE more leverage to acquire grant money for further development.

Originally, the French Creek historical marker was installed along Rt 322 near Cochranton.  Showing its age roadside and hardly visible at 55 mph, CARE, in keeping with one of its mission goals relating to historic preservation, saw an opportunity to see the sign refurbished and re-installed creekside.  Working with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), CARE was able to see the sign restored and moved to its present location.  In addition to the marker an American flag, a state flag and the newly adopted Cochranton borough flag will stand.

Dedication of the marker is planned for Saturday, July 14, as part of the French Creek Heritage Event slated for that weekend.  To date it is known that member of the PHMC will speak and a George Washington re-enactor will arrive by boat. Other details about the ceremony will be forthcoming.

Fun at the Auction!

Last night's auction was a resounding success!  CARE is grateful to be a part of such a supportive community so full of goodness and generosity and is looking forward to completing the launch and landing site at the town's French Creek access point, the Memorial Garden in Lions Park and Phase III of the playground project with the money raised. 

The auction itself boasted of 47 baskets for raffle and approximately 80 items in the live auction.  Andrea Mailliard won the quilt stitched and donated by The Undercover Girls, Joan Seely, Peggie Moorhead, Martha Dupont and Linda McNamara.  Senator Michelle Brooks who has been working with CARE on the Senior Housing Project, donated a lovely garden planter and then surprised us all by attending the auction.   Lisa Youngs won the Green Mountain Pellet BBQ grill.  Auctioneer, Larry Porter, and his sidekick, Beth, entertained the crowd throughout the evening with lively banter.  All in all, it was great fun.
